The Woodlanders novel was authored by Thomas Hardy. Thomas Hardy was an English novelist , poet and short story writer. Thomas Hardy was born on 2 June 1840 in Higher Bockhampton a hamlet in the parish of Stinsford to the east of Dorchester in Dorset, England.Hardy trained as an architect in Dorchester before moving to London in 1862; there he enrolled as a student at King's College London.

He won prizes from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architectural Association. He joined Arthur Blomfield's practice as assistant architect in April 1862 and worked with Blomfield on All Saints' parish church in Windsor, Berkshire in 1862–64. A reredose, possibly designed by Hardy, was discovered behind paneling at All Saints' in August 2016. In the mid-1860s, Hardy was in charge of the excavation of part of the graveyard of St Pancras Old Church prior to its destruction when the Midland Railway was extended to a new terminus at St Pancras.

The story takes place in a small woodland area village referred to as little hintock, and concerns the efforts of an sincere woodsman, giles winter borne, to marry his adolescence sweetheart, grace melbury. Despite the fact that they were informally betrothed for a while, her father has made economic sacrifices to offer his loved simplest child a superior education and no longer considers giles correct enough for her. While the new doctor – a well-born and handsome younger guy named edred fitzpiers – takes an interest in grace, her father does all he can to make grace overlook giles, and to encourage what he sees as a super suit. 

Grace has misgivings previous to the wedding as she sees a village girl (suke damson) popping out of his cottage very early within the morning and suspects he has been sleeping together with her. She tells her father that she does not need to head on with the marriage and he turns into very angry. Later fitzpiers tells her suke has been to go to him due to the fact she became in soreness from toothache and he extracted a molar. Both suke damson and mrs charmond turn up at grace's residence demanding to recognize whether or not fitzpiers is all proper - grace addresses them both paradoxically as "wives -all". Fitzpiers later deserts grace and is going to the continent with mrs charmond. Grace realises that she has only ever actually cherished giles however as there's no opportunity of divorce feels that her love appears hopeless.,,.....
